Labour Kill Fuel Poverty Bill

June 27, 2009

Labour have killed off a new law to end the scandal of fuel poverty. The bill, proposed by Liberal Democrat MP David Heath, would have provided insulation for all homes in the country, but Labour threw it out when it came before Parliament recently.

Every year, nearly 3,000 older people in Lewisham have to choose between keeping warm and putting food on the table. Like millions of others around the country, they suffer from fuel poverty.

The new law would have brought this disgrace to an end, and at the same time tackled climate change and given a boost to the economy by creating ‘green jobs’.

But we haven’t given up yet. The Bill must come before Parliament again. That’s why we have organised a petition to convince Labour to re-consider. I recently submitted it to David Heath MP and I’d like to thank all those who signed in support.
