Veterans Old and Young at Armed Forces Day

July 8, 2009

Arthur Arnold

I had the honour of meeting Arthur Arnold at the Armed Forces Day remembrance service recently. Arthur, who has lived in Catford for over 40 years, served in Burma in the second world war. He told me how tough it was in the Burmese jungle; an experience I can sympathise with in a tiny way, having trekked across Burma’s humid mountains myself.

Father Clive French, who led the service, made an important point. He said that we often think of veterans as old men, but today our veterans are also teenagers on the frontline in Afghanistan.
