Shopping Service Saved!

July 13, 2009

Shopping Service Saved Small
A vital shopping service for older residents in Downham and Whitefoot has been saved!

The Supported Shopping Service was a lifeline for isolated older residents, who relied on it for their weekly shopping. More than that, it offered them a chance to get out the house and socialise. The service was due to be axed when Labour-run Lewisham Council changed its funding priorities, but following the intervention of local residents and the Lib Dem team, the service has been saved. At a packed meeting of the Whitefoot Assembly this week, residents voted unanimously to award funding from the councillor’s ‘localities fund’ to the project, securing its future for at least another year.

“The shopping service is so important for these residents. It’s not just about getting in the shopping, it’s about getting out the house. Congratulations to everyone who backed our campaign to save the project!”
