Independent? Authoritative? You must be joking!

August 16, 2009

Observer Letter 16-8-09The House of Commons will lose its ‘independence’ and ‘authority’, when dozens of MPs stand down at the next general election, according to Labour’s Denis McShane MP, in an article he wrote for the OBSERVER last week. Independence? Authority? As I pointed out in a LETTER to the Observer, published today, these are no longer words we associated with the Commons.

Take the record of the current Labour MP in Lewisham East. In recent months she’s voted for the third runway at Heathrow, the closure of local post offices and the abolition of the 10pence tax band, which has hit the poorest the hardest. She even voted to keep MP’s £24,000 expense allowance!

If this is Labour’s idea of independence and authority, we should welcome a new wave of MPs who may give us the fresh start we deserve.
