Council rent shocker

February 11, 2010

When James Newton got in touch with me, I could hardly believe what he told me. After his aunt, a Lewisham Council tenant, died before Christmas, he and his family followed all the correct procedures to inform the Council that their aunt had passed away.

But without warning, two months after her death, he was landed with a bill for the month’s rent after his aunt died.

Now I appreciate the Council has to maintain its rental income, but Mr Newton and his family knew nothing of this policy and were given no warning about. The council needs to think through how to deal with this situation in a much more sensitive way.
